Magnets are a thing of the past!

Cool Implementation

The use of RFID isn't limited to user-end application, either. When it comes to back-of-house, RFID can greatly speed up the check-in and sorting process. A library may invest in an automatic sorting machine to help cut down on processing time.

The video above illustrates how such a machine works. It automatically reads the material's tag, discharges it from the patron's account, and rough sorts them based on shelving location, subject, or department.

However, this machine isn't for everyone. In my interview, the library in question has so large a collection that such a machine would be insufficient; four or five would have to work in tandem in order to sort the materials properly. Ideally, this would help a smaller community library or an academic library at a university.

Eventually, some libraries hope to utilize built-in RFID readers in flagship cell phones to help streamline the user experience. A patron would be able to check out materials from the stacks without having to potentially wait in a checkout line! However, the inclusion of RFID/NFC readers in cell phones is not yet widespread enough to implement such a system.
