I interviewed a specialist in RFID from the Madison Central Public Library in the South Central Library System in order to get a more first-hand account from a recently-converted institution. They mostly had positive things to say about the migration.
Central Library was not the first in the system to change over (that was the Sun Prairie Library), so they were able to use other library's experience in making the changeover. The migration occurred in part because Central was undergoing a renovation. They used a much smaller, satellite location in the interim and I was curious how this might have impacted the change. They told me the process was amazingly easier; since the bulk of the materials were stored offsite from the satellite location they were able to process them there at the staff's own pace.
Additionally, the specialist told me that self-checkout use has increased greatly with the change. Once patrons are aware of its simplicity, they tend to use it far more than the circulation desk.
